Why Join a Synagogue?

September 11, 2014
If you’re Jewish and unaffiliated, then either you haven’t thought much about why you should join a synagogue, your synagogue experiences to date have been uninspiring, or both.  Like finding the right partner, finding the right synagogue is not always easy, but it’s worth it.  And we’d like to help.

Synagogues offer a sense of Jewish community, a place for adults as well as children to strengthen Jewish connections.  These connections come in many forms- prayer, deeds of loving kindness, social justice (just to name a few) - and they take place in the nurturing context of a community.

When should children be introduced to synagogue life?  The earlier in someone’s life that they are part of a synagogue community, the more likely they are to form strong bonds. So- the sooner, the better!

The Jewish Federation of Rockland County’s Rockland Jewish Initiative offers a color directory (both printed and on-line) of synagogues affiliated with the Rockland Board of Rabbis to help you look around.  We also offer a New Member Grant to reduce the cost of synagogue membership.
