REVIEW: South Pacific at the Westchester Broadway Theatre

By Enjoli Joseph, Co-Publisher of New City Nyack Macaroni Kid November 20, 2014

My husband and I had the pleasure of attending the Westchester Broadway Theatre showing of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s award-winning “South Pacific.” “South Pacific” is based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning book Tales of the South Pacific by James A. Michener. Neither one of us was familiar with the show, but what a treat we experienced!

Taken place in the South Pacific, the show examines issues of love, war, and racism. The cast of characters are extremely talented and entertaining. Watch how Emile and Nellie meet, fall in love, and then face obstacles involved with family and cultural differences. We also enjoyed watching the courtship between Joe and Liat. You will be engrossed in their love story as much as that of Emile and Nellie’s.

“South Pacific” has great musical numbers that are catchy, such as the popular “I’m Gonna Wash That Man Right Outta My Hair” that will have you tapping your feet the entire show! Humor was perfectly placed throughout the show to lighten the mood a bit, especially when addressing the issues of war and racism that consistently showed up. We appreciated the opportunities to be able to laugh.

Rodgers and Hammerstein’s “South Pacific” is a riveting show that will take you through a series of emotions that will be sure to make an imprint on your heart. A “must see” for everyone!
