Interview with Dr. Michael Milham at NKI

January 29, 2015
We had the opportunity to speak with Dr. Michael Milham, a doctor at the Nathan Kline Institute (NKI). Four years ago, an initiative was started for a landmark study for brain imaging. At the time, this information was being gathered only from Rockland County residents. Since then, a decision was made to expand this research, allowing youth from Westchester County and Bergen County to participate as well.
The base study, which is being funded by a special grant provided by the federal government and the Child Mind Institute in New York City, includes candidates ranging from ages 6-85. An additional component of the base study includes “checking in” on participants who are aged 6-18 years at fifteen months and thirty months after the initial visits.
As the data is collected and personal identifying information removed, the results will be shared with other scientists so that the scientific community is working together.
So… how can you help the Nathan Kline Institute gather this information?
Consider participating in the brain study. Please be aware that participating involves a 2-day commitment. The days do not have to be back-to-back. The Nathan Kline Institute has increased their weekend hours to allow more flexibility with scheduling. NKI really needs participants to get a full representation in order to learn more about the brain and how it works.
Why should a parent considering having their child participate in the longitudinal study?
The doctors can determine whether a child is at risk for a mental condition.
You will be given feedback in the form of a report if there are any concerns.
A mental health screening will be administered.
There will be guidance and referral information provided.
You will have an opportunity to speak with a licensed psychologist.
What can I expect when I arrive at the Nathan Kline Institute?
Your vital signs will be taken and a blood sample will be collected.
Cardiovascular fitness test
 Tasks that will measure cognitive function
Questionnaires about emotions and experiences
Online surveys for parents/adults
Practice MRI scan and then a formal MRI scan
Staff members are incredibly nice, professional and very accommodating.
